Legislation
Even though there is a tremendous effort to protect an individual’s privacy, it is open records that protect each one of us the most. We must balance the need to know against the need to protect. It goes to the core of the American judicial system. People who are involved in legal proceedings need to be able to locate witnesses on their behalf. This is usually done by a private investigator and often through the use of a social security number.
It is important to maintain the social security number as the only unique identifier used in the United States. Private investigators who are working on behalf of their clients are typically using the social security number along with other tools to locate witnesses and others. Private investigations need to continue having the social security number as it is a viable tool, the need to know.
As for the need to protect, there is not a law that can adequately serve to protect each of us. We need to protect ourselves by frequently monitoring our own credit card statements, banks statements and other financial asset records. We need to review our credit reports periodically. We need to ensure that we receive our mail in a secure place. If we see something amiss, we need to act immediately and notify the appropriate entities.
It is to this end that private investigators and security professionals monitor legislation and oppose bills proactively that will undermine the law that keep records open in the United States.
