It was reported that Elizabeth Fern Rathjen walked away from Stockton State Mental Hospital in 1956. But did she? Mass graves were found with at least 40 intact human skeletons. Is one of the skeletons Elizabeth? Her daughter Joyce Tafoya thinks so. Tammy Davidson, the licensed private investigator Joyce hired to locate her mother, thinks it is a good possibility. Joyce ran into obstacles at every turn. She finally was granted an injunction to keep the skeletons from just being reburied when unearthed by a construction company working on the old hospital site and to get them examined for time of death, sex and height. Joyce Tafoya
Joyce Tafoya was born Terry Lee McDonald. Joyce always knew she was different from the rest of the family. When Joyce was 37 years old, her adopted grandmother broke the news that she was adopted. Joyce ultimately obtained a copy of the relinquishment document that included her birth name and the name of her mother, Elizabeth Fern Rathjen. Joyce spent the next 20 plus years looking for her mother and finally located her Uncle Bud who gave her photos of her mother and her mother’s medical records. Her mother was committed to a mental institution, Stockton State Mental Hospital in Stockton, CA but walked away in 1956. After years of searching on her own and hiring private investigators, Joyce found licensed private investigator, Tammy Davidson in 2007.Tammy located information concerning mass graves found on the old hospital grounds and the results are still pending. Tammy Davidson
Tammy Davidson has assisted hundreds of clients locate lost loved ones including missing children and was instrumental in recovering two missing children from a SF Bay Area underground child advocacy group operated by a convicted child molester.
